Introduction to philosophy: Desires and happiness
This introduction to meditation series will finalise with a short explanation on desire. I have already mentioned desire earlier on as one of the root causes of stress and negativity. Here I want to explain a very simple formula, that can be used to prove how desire and happiness correlate negatively.
H = Df/De (Happiness equals Desires fulfilled divided by Desires entertained).
Your happiness level can thus be quantified from 100% to 0%, and it depends on the number of the desires you have, and the number of desires that are fulfilled. Simply put, you can have 10 desires, and 5 are fulfilled, and that then makes you 50% happy. You can increase your happiness by increasing the number of fulfilled desires, or decreasing the amount of your desires. I agree, it would be more fun to have all desires fulfilled. However, human nature has as a basic rule that once all desires are fulfilled, you will want something new. So going this way, you will never reach 100%.
The other way is to decrease your desires. The less things you want, the easier it becomes to be happy. Ironically, people think when you want nothing, you have nothing to live and strive for. That however can be disproved by this equation too: once your desires decrease to zero, the equation will become 0/0=infinite. Infinite happiness is waiting for you! And meditation can help you with that.
