Introduction to Meditation

Today we start with the next series of 8 posts – an introduction to meditation! Many people tell me the same thing: “Ferry… I tried to meditate, but I just can’t do it. Other people can, but my mind is just too active! My mind is not suitable for meditation!” If you think so too, or you have the same experience, let me tell you something. If your mind is not suitable for meditation, no one’s mind is suitable for meditation! You probably went to sit down in a quiet space and tried to stop thinking. Our mind reacts exactly the same in this situation.

The good news is, you already reached it to this point that you think that meditation may be useful for you. To make meditation work, there are tips and tricks and in the coming days, I will share some with you, together with some basic philosophical concepts. For today I want to give two things already: Firstly, know that a successful meditation comes forth out of a combination of study and daily practice. Philosophy is important for meditation as is knowing traffic rules is important for driving. Secondly, if you want to calm down your mind, first you need to get very busy. This may sound paradoxical, but your mind is too powerful to be easily caught. We need to use a variety of things to distract your mind and calm it down.
