Focus on the heart
Now we have touched on the topic of why the breath is so important for meditation, the next step after calming our breath is to place the attention down from your head towards your heart. In my meditations I often say “Allow your mind to sink down into the heart”. Why the heart and not the brain? Is the brain not the place from which we think? Yes and that’s exactly why!
The heart is the center of our being. It is the epicentre of our physical body. If the heart does not beat, there will be little activity elsewhere. But apart of the body, it is also the place where our soul resides. Is it not so, that very often in a thorny issue you are involved in, there will be two voices speaking to you? The voice of your mind and the voice of your heart? The voice of your heart is always the voice of your soul. The voice of your mind is always the voice of your ego. Your mind and ego will always do their very best to distract you from listening to the mind and will use reasoning from the world: money, nice things, status, etc. to ‘bribe’ you over. Yet, the one and only real voice of your soul, of who you really are, comes always from the heart. Listen to your heart a bit more and you will find more happiness, and less grief.
