Philosophy: Identification of the mind
We have yesterday reached a first deeper topic, of how the pause in the breath will uncover the identification of your mind. This is an amazing discovery! Your mind is full of stories that keep you busy, make you happy, make you sad, stress you out, give you desire, making plans, and what not! In normal life situations and without meditation training, you identify with all these stories of the mind. I am angry, I am happy, I am successful, I am a loser. But is that really who you are? I often take the example of a banker. Your mind often lets you identify with your work, in this case, the person involved thinks he is a banker. But that is not what he really is. Because what you really are, is what you are always, no matter what situation. If this person quits his job, can he still identify himself as a banker? Some people even do that – they create a double illusion over the illusion itself. They say they are still a banker despite they now already work in another industry. All this identification with things of the mind, objects and concepts of the world, is what covers our real Self in a thick blanket of emotions, desires, successes and failures. So thick, that plenty people will never find out who they really are. This is exactly what we tackle in meditation. We will embark on a journey to find who we really are.
