Meditation posture
As indicated yesterday, we need to get busy in order to calm down our mind. We need to distract it and in the following posts to come I will try to let you understand the basic concepts. Posture is the first thing that you need to be mindful of when meditating. In Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is mentioned, “Asana stiram sukhanam” – the posture has to be firm and comfortable. What is most important is that your back is straight. Regarding seating positions, actually you don’t have to sit in lotus to be meditating properly. As long as you can keep your back straight and keep the position for the duration of your meditation, it is alright, even if that means sitting on a chair. That is why the posture has to be “firm”. The comfort is important for a very simple reason: if you are in pain while meditating, there is no meditation. So make sure that your position is except firm, also comfortable.
Secondly, there are several hand positions that are called ‘mudra’. These mudras will have an effect on the energy flows during your meditation. Certain hand positions help you with receiving energy, others help you with activation of your mind if you are in a dull state, and different ones can help you with calming down of your mind if you are in an agitated state.
It takes time and practice to find your right position and hold it and that is one of the things that we will practice in class 😊
